The new VCF coach gave an extensive press conference to explain his plans and ambitions upon joining the club
José Bordalás was presented as the new coach of Valencia CF with a video press conference at Mestalla on Thursday. The new incumbent in the dugout, who has signed for the next two seasons plus an optional one-year extension, talked about his plans and the challenge ahead.
A message of thanks
"I want to thank the president, Anil Murthy, and Miguel Ángel Corona for their faith in me. I am facing this opportunity with tremendous enthusiasm."
Bringing back the club's identity
"It is time for us to analyse, agree on the requirements of the squad and see what they need to be as competitive as possible, so that we can recover the identity of Valencia CF. The goal is for the fans to leave Mestalla excited and satisfied with what they have seen: A team that competes and gives absolutely everything. Like anything, a period of time is needed. The sooner we get to work and recover the hallmarks of the club, the sooner we can be competitive."
Regaining status in LaLiga
"I have come here to work, to try to make Valencia CF a competitive team and to make sure that the club occupy the place they deserve. I want us to be able to fight against any team and adapt to the possibilities. We will work for Valencia CF to regain status in LaLiga. I will try to put all my knowledge at the disposal of Valencia CF and get the fans excited again."
"I spent five seasons at Getafe CF and Valencia CF is a major challenge. The objective will be set for us on a daily basis. We have a fanbase that has incredible strength. We have to try to make sure that there is a bond between the team and the fans, and that Mestalla is a fortress. I have never set a long-term goals because you have to go little by little, working and build the foundations. I cannot afford to disappoint either the people who have believed in me, nor the fans nor the city. My level of commitment is huge. I am very demanding on myself and on the players, and I will try to ensure that the team lives up to the history of this club."
Bringing energy
"Valencia CF are coming off a season that was not good, and the objective is to recover the good feeling that was here before, and for Valencia CF to occupy that status that we should have in LaLiga. I arrive with all the energy in the world, with a lot of enthusiasm, and I am convinced that the team are going to give everything."
Peter Lim
"I have not spoken with Peter Lim personally, and I don't think it is necessary. I have spoken with Anil Murthy, and he is in contact with Peter Lim. They decided that I was to be the coach. Without a doubt, I will meet him at some point."
Optimism
"I am optimistic and I have come here to try to improve Valencia CF. I will focus all my energy on the day-to-day task at hand. I'm convinced that we can do it. We have to be optimistic and united. I have no doubt that we will succeed. I know the Valencia CF squad, and it's a good one. Players need to be brought in for specific positions. We're working on this and then the ball will start rolling."
Relationship with the players
"I'm a person who has a very close relationship with my players. There is always going to be a player who is less happy because he isn't playing, but my goal is for each of them to get better every day. I think I have achieved that in a high percentage of cases during my career. There are players with great potential At Valencia CF, and they will get back to their best level, which is my goal as coach."
Valencia CF DNA
"All Valencianistas know what the Valencia CF DNA is. I am not here to establish much that Valencia CF have not had already; I'm just here to help get that DNA back. We will see it day by day, and we will see it during the season. There are young players and experienced players here. The team need to sign in some positions, bringing in players who give a leap up in quality. We are convinced that we will succeed and that Valencia CF will be a very competitive team. Have no doubt about that."
"There are players who are definitely going to continue here, and I have been informed of this. There might be some players who leave, but always in the case that the offer is interesting for Valencia CF."
Working in consensus
"The president has said that we are going to reach a consensus on decisions. I have no doubt that we are going to have a very good relationship. We will agree on the squad for next season and we will try to make as few mistakes as possible -and be a team that recovers Valencia CF's historical status."
Playing style
"I don't usually define my coaching style. I've never done that. The fans, the presidents and the players will have to do that… Valencia CF's hallmarks are in the club's DNA. I have always identified Valencia CF with a very, very well defined identity. The style of play will depend on the squad and the players we have.
"I am not closed minded about a style -far from it. We must be open in order to get the most out of a player and adapt to get the best out of the team. I have used 4-4-2 for several seasons, but that was because of the profile of the players we had. The idea is that the team be attacking and have an ambitious and winning mentality, and that they set important goals for themselves. This is what I try to instil in my players: The highest level of ambition. We should not start thinking about our weaknesses, but rather about our virtues and being ambitious."
